"I am connected forever with my collectors."

"See more of my paintings on the matted print page, as most of my work was created on commission for private collectors."

This composition was created in memory of Erin Brandow who was my teenaged assistant and my friend before she died of cystic phybrosis. Her parents commissioned this with the understanding that they would not participate other than to request that the painting in some way would reflect our Erin.  They wanted to be surprised.

Every painting has a story, and this is no exception. I saved pages of letters that I wrote to Erin's family, outlining my feelings, experiences and inspiration while I worked on this project, all the while knowing they would treasure the process through my writing, once they had the painting in their home.

I chose to paint peonies because they represent Erin's home at the Jersey Shore. I named the color of the flowers "Erin Pink". The lavender Victorian vase with the pale yellow rose is a kiss for her amazing mother (a consummate collector or antiques). The pattern on pattern that you see in this composition was what Erin liked best about my bouquets. The Chinese jug in the foreground was also my cookie jar, and she thought it was The Best, and the angel in the background is actually the studio door-stop that she adored. I once told her that if she outlived me, it was hers!

Painting is an incredible experience. It's not easy, but it is what I love doing and I thank my lucky stars that I can. How else would I have opportunities with such special people that have made my life so much more than long?" SE

"Commissions are collaborations between the artist and the collector. Many artists do not like working like this. I adore it!. My work is very personal, and I like the interaction between myself and the people I am painting for. I also welcome the added dimension of beginning with a blank canvas and ideas, input, and inspiration from a source other than myself. It adds to the challenge and has kept my work very fresh and original.

Sometimes we start with a particular shade of blue or a grandmother's teacup or a gardenia from a wedding bouquet. Often a collector has a particular place they want a specific sized painting, or they are in the process of re-decorating or building and we work with blueprints and swatches and lighting plans.

Whatever the case, we begin by deciding upon the size of the canvas which determines the price. We discuss subjects and scale, sharing ideas, and then I begin my sketches. I work on the composition, connected all the while with my collector by telephone and mailings. I do a final drawing on the actual canvas and strike off a palette that I send my collector before I pick up a brush. It is an enormously creative process that most collectors have never experienced. It is a labor of love, and the reason I have spent the past fifteen years of my career doing almost nothing but paintings on commission. Most of the prints and posters featured on my web site are reproductions of commissioned paintings.

I am now accepting fewer commissions to make time for more writing and to create collections of paintings with a single theme that can be shown publicly. I intend to connect with a gallery that will feature a Sara Eyestone collection as well as connect me with collectors that I will paint for on commission. In the meantime, you can contact me directly. My telephone number is 505.577.4991.

I require a 50% deposit once we commit to the project, with the balance due when I finish. I will send you my price list and gladly answer any questions you may have when you call. Please keep in mind that there is a wait for my work. In the past it has been up to two years, but since I am taking on other directions and have not written as many commissions intentionally, my time is more flexible." SE

"I have recently been painting horses, which should not surprise you since I have been living in Texas for almost ten years now! My paintings are so life-like that I notice people actually reaching out to touch the nose. All of the equine portraits I am creating will be available as matted prints."

Dear Sara,

Our paintings are wonderful – I can hardly wait to get my rug done to pull everything together. You are a genius!

Love you much, Larry and Joanne (Jasper)

These three originals were commissioned by Joanne & Larry Jasper for their new home.  THE BLUE HERON VASE is a welcoming site on the main wall of their entrance, it is 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide and created with deep jewel toned colors.  The bird on the vase was painted from a photograph of a blue heron seen from their kitchen window.  The rose paintings are 3 feet square, and they are installed one above the other on a tall free standing living room wall.  The blossoms are from the Jasper's new garden.  Painting for the Jaspers was a breathtaking project.
